Future Hall of Famer Miguel Cabrera passed the ceremonial torch to former No. 1 overall pick Spencer Torkelson Saturday afternoon.
Detroit Tigers' general manager Al Avila announced Saturday that former No. 1 overall pick Spencer Torkelson has made the team's Opening Day roster. According to Avila -- via Evan Woodbery of MLive Media Group -- Cabrera handed Torkelson the first baseman's mitt, as the two-time American League MVP will shift to DH to make room for Torkelson.
Torkelson -- who starred at Arizona State collegiately -- has hit .280 with seven hits and three RBIs in 25 at-bats this spring. The 22-year-old homered 30 times and drove in 91 runs in 2021, while playing at three levels of the minor leagues, topping out at Triple-A.
MLB Pipeline has Torkelson ranked as the No. 4 overall prospect in baseball, saying that he "has the offensive capability to be an elite middle-of-the-lineup talent in the Majors."
Torkelson will join a Tigers lineup that still features Cabrera, along with Javier Báez, Akil Baddoo, Jonathan Schoop and Robbie Grossman.
