
On Tuesday evening, Alabama’s DeVonta Smith was announced as the winner of this year's Heisman Trophy, annually given to the college football player voted as the best in the nation by the Downtown Athletic Club of New York City.
Smith is the first wide receiver since Michigan's Desmond Howard to win the award; that was 29 years ago.
Wichita's Breece Hall, a sophomore running back at Iowa State, finished in sixth place in the Heisman voting. Hall led the nation in rushing yards; he picked up a half dozen first-place votes. Smith received 447 first-place votes.
Hall, a consensus All-American, finished the season with 1,572 rushing yards and 23 touchdowns.
