Dustin Johnson can now add a green jacket to his resume.

The No. 1 ranked golfer in the world won his first career Masters on Sunday, and did so in historic fashion with a 20-under par -- a new record score for the storied tournament.

It also matched the lowest score to par by any champion at a major and his five-shot margin of victory was the largest in the Masters since Tiger Woods won by 12 shots in 1997.

Johnson, who finished in a second-place tie at last year’s Masters, entered the final round at 16-under 200 – matching the 54-hole record set by Jordan Spieth in 2015 – and with a four-shot lead.

Despite the large lead, there was still pressure on Johnson entering Sunday. The 36-year-old has had at least a share of the 54-hole lead in a major four other times and did not convert. Most recently in August, when he held a 54-hole lead at the PGA Championship before finishing in second place.

The only major Johnson had won before Sunday – the 2016 U.S. Open – came after he rallied from a four-shot deficit.

But Johnson shot four-under par in the final round to outlast Australian Cameron Smith.

Johnson’s victory caps a 2020 season in which he was voted PGA Tour Player of the Year. He had won two other tournaments since the beginning of August and finished runner-up three times.

Johnson’s Masters victory also comes a month after he was diagnosed with COVID-19 and forced to miss two tournaments.
