Serena Williams returned to her first tennis match in almost exactly a year since tearing her hamstring and she was engaged in yet another classic battle at Wimbledon on Tuesday.
Only this time, she was on the losing end.
The 40-year-old Williams, in what could be her final time playing at Wimbledon, was defeated by 24-year-old Harmony Tan out of France in three sets.
It marks just the third time she has lost in the opening round of a major, with the previous two coming last year at Wimbledon (when she withdrew due to her injury) and in 2012 in the French Open when she fell to Virginie Razzano.
The match was a classic indeed, though, lasting more than three hours and was decided on a tiebreaker.
Williams appeared as if she was going to prevail, going up 4-0 in the tiebreaker before Tan rallied for five straight points and eventual win in what was her Wimbledon debut.
Despite the loss, many on social media remained in awe of Williams’ performance at 40 years old coming off an injury, especially in the marathon-like fashion it took place, while others wondered just how much, if at all, we will see of Serena again?
