Dawson Armstrong outlasted a six-hole playoff Sunday to win the Wichita Open, earning his first TOUR-sanctioned victory in seven years.
The Spring Hill, Tennessee native birdied the sixth extra hole to defeat Harry Lord of England and Corey Pereira of Sacramento, California, capping off a dramatic finish at Crestview Country Club.
Armstrong entered the final round five shots behind leader Harry Lord but posted one of the day's best rounds with a 2-under-par 68 despite wind gusts exceeding 40 mph. His round included just one bogey and was one of only 12 under-par scores on a difficult day for the field.
After Armstrong finished at 12-under par, Lord and Pereira matched the total to force a three-man playoff. The trio exchanged pars over the first three extra holes before Lord was eliminated with a bogey on the fourth playoff hole. Armstrong and Pereira continued until the sixth extra hole on No. 18, where Pereira's tee shot sailed out of bounds. Armstrong then hit an 8-iron from 183 yards to set up the tournament-winning birdie.
The victory marks Armstrong's first TOUR-sanctioned win since the 2019 Windsor Championship on PGA TOUR Canada. It also moves him to No. 6 on the PGA TOUR Americas Points List as he chases one of 10 Korn Ferry Tour cards available at the end of the season.
The win comes after several difficult seasons for the 30-year-old. Armstrong revealed that he and his wife, Sam, who welcomed their first daughter seven months ago, had discussed stepping away from professional golf if he wasn't back on the Korn Ferry Tour by the end of 2026.
"I want to do whatever I can to support my wife in being a mother," Armstrong said. "We kind of came to a decision that if I wasn't back on the Korn Ferry Tour by the end of 2026, then the clubs would go up in the attic."
Instead, a tie for fifth at the Diners Club Peru Open in May helped improve his standing, and Sunday's victory puts him in strong position for a return to the Korn Ferry Tour.
"I was in shambles in 2023 and 2024, in absolute shambles," Armstrong said. "The emotional release was a lot of validation that I can finish it off, I can stay in contention, and I can finish it off."
Following a week off, PGA TOUR Americas returns to action July 9-12 for the Explore NB Open in Fredericton, New Brunswick.
