For the second week in a row, a disputed call by the officials was a factor late in a close loss for the Chiefs.
In Week 13, it was a no-call on an obvious pass interference by a Green Bay Packers defensive back that likely would have affected the outcome of the game.
In that instance, Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes took the high road.
But against the Bills in Week 14, when a go-ahead Chiefs touchdown was taken off the board late in the fourth quarter due to a relatively rare offensive offsides penalty against wide receiver Kadarius Toney, Mahomes lost his cool.
While the penalty appears to have been the correct call, Mahomes' reaction was perhaps the bigger story. The two-time MVP is not known for berating officials or sideline tantrums, but that was not the case against Buffalo.
But with the benefit of a night to regain his composure, Mahomes seems to have changed his tune.
Asked about whether he's seen replays of the sequence in question, Mahomes said he had -- and expressed regret over his actions.
"I’ve seen a little bit of it, I’ve tried to stay away from it a little bit," Mahomes told host Carrington Harrison during his weekly appearance on "The Drive" on 610 Sports Radio in Kansas City.
"Obviously you don’t want to react that way, I mean, I care, man. I love it -- I love this game, and I love my teammates. I want to go out there and put everything on the line to win, but obviously you can’t do that, can’t be that way towards officials or really anybody in life. So, I’ll probably regret acting like that. But more than anything, I regretted the way I acted towards Josh [Allen] after the game, because he had nothing to do with it. I was still hot and emotional, but you can’t do that. It’s not a great example for kids watching the game. I was more upset about that than me on the sidelines."
According to Mahomes, he wasn't surprised by his seemingly out-of-character reaction, because his frustration was partly rooted in the fact that the penalty wasn't explained to him.
"It was a big play in the game. Obviously, it got negated because of a foul. I didn’t have a great explanation for it, obviously I’m not seeing the view from the sideline or anything like that. I didn’t even really know – I heard the call, from where I was you couldn’t really tell what really happened, and I was trying to get an explanation and didn’t really get one. Obviously I’ve seen it now, and if he didn’t check and they weren’t good, it is a foul. It is something you rarely see called in the NFL. But it was a foul, it’s part of playing the game, man. You learn from it, it’s part of being a person, you learn from you mistakes and try to be better next time."
As for the play itself, it was an uncanny cross-field lateral from Travis Kelce to Toney after a long reception.
While the first part of the play was by design, the lateral wasn't, Mahomes said.
"It was 100 percent improv. That’s just a great player making a great play in a big-time moment. To have the knowledge of your surroundings to know that guy is wide open across the field and getting the ball to him to try to make a play for the team. It truly was a really cool play. It stinks that it didn’t count, but it shows the type of player he is."
