New planning documents are offering the clearest look yet at the Kansas City Royals' proposed $3 billion ballpark district at Crown Center.
The preliminary master plan, filed as part of the city's redevelopment review process, outlines a 91-acre district centered around a new downtown stadium and a mix of residential, retail, office, hotel and entertainment developments. The project would be built in phases over roughly a decade, with portions of the development expected to be completed between 2031 and 2040.
According to the proposal, the district would be divided into 10 development areas surrounding the new ballpark. While the stadium remains the centerpiece, the plan also includes new public spaces, parking facilities and mixed-use buildings designed to transform the Crown Center area into a year-round destination. Final uses for many of the buildings will be determined as the project moves through the planning process.
The Royals said they continue to work with Hallmark and local and state leaders as plans move forward.
"We continue to work closely with Hallmark as well as local and state leaders, and are following all guidelines laid out by the city and state to reimagine Crown Center," the team said in a statement. "We're excited about the progress and remain focused on the work ahead."
The proposal does not include Washington Square Park, which had previously been discussed as a possible part of the development. Instead, the plans focus entirely on the Crown Center site.
The City Plan Commission is expected to review the redevelopment proposal in the coming months as the Royals continue working toward a projected opening of the new ballpark in 2030.
