Although most people saw it coming, the news that Bobby Witt Jr. will be the Royals' Opening Day third baseman only ratcheted up the excitement for Thursday's game. The team made the announcement official with a Tweet on Tuesday morning:
Shortly after the news broke, Witt, the #1 overall prospect in all of baseball, spoke with local media about how he found out, and what that infamous moment was like to him.
"I got called into skipper's office, and I walked in and I see Whit, Benny, and Salvy in there," he said. "[I saw] JJ, and skip was in there. I saw Whit kind of videoing, so that's kind of how I know something was up. And then they just told me the news, and it was just awesome. It was awesome being able to share it with those guys as well. And I came in here after and all the guys were congratulating me. I can't really put words to the feeling of how it was. My stomach sank, tears came to my eyes. It was something I'll obviously never forget."
