The late rock singer David Crosby who died Thursday at the age of 81, often credited his 1982 Dallas arrest for saving his career and, more importantly his life.

Playing at the now-defunct night spot Cardi's, Crosby was in his dressing room when Dallas police raided the place, arresting Crosby who they said was "free-basing in plain view."

Dallas Police also confiscated a pistol which added to the charges against him. Crosby served nine months in the Dallas County jail including seven in Huntsville.

But even though he had subsequent legal woes including more drug and weapons charges in California, Crosby always maintained his Texas prison stretch helped him clean up his life and to recover his health enough to resume his music career.

He said he wrote a thank-you note to the Dallas judge who sentenced him.
