Michigan State, Gonzaga set to play basketball game aboard an aircraft carrier

Witnessing a basketball game on an aircraft carrier was something my pre-teen mind could only fathom in 2011 when Michigan State and UNC took the court on the USS Carl Vinson in San Diego.

The fanfare for the event was intense. Former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle made an appearance, along with Magic Johnson, one of Michigan State's most famous alums.

After one more iteration of ESPN's Carrier Classic, the event took a pause in 2012. However, according to CBS Sports Jon Rothstein, the Carrier Classic is back on with the Spartans finalizing plans to take on the Gonzaga Bulldogs in San Diego later this year.

According to Rothstein's sources, the game will be played on Veterans Day (11/11) and it will also mark the first time in a decade that a basketball game was played on top of an aircraft carrier.

The Spartans were a part of the first Carrier Classic which saw a Draymond Green led Spartans squads losing to North Carolina 67-55.

Some fans on Twitter seem ready to see what the new version of the carrier classic will look like.

This will certainly be one event to mark on the sports calendar. Let's just hope the weather doesn't get in the way like it did in 2012 when rain forced San Diego State and Syracuse to play two days later.
