The Red Sox are bringing back a familiar face for the stretch drive.

According to a major league source, the Sox have claimed Travis Shaw off of waivers from the Brewers. The first baseman is expected to join the Red Sox for their doubleheader with the Yankees in New York Tuesday.

Shaw still has 20 days left on his current minor-league rehab assignment, coming back from a dislocated left shoulder. He last played in the majors on June 9. In 11 games with Triple-A Nashville, the lefty hitter managed a .273 batting average and .900 OPS along with two home runs.

The 31-year-old spent two seasons with the Red Sox before being dealt to Milwaukee in a trade that brought back reliever Tyler Thornburg. After three seasons with the Brewers, Shaw spent 2020 with Toronto before returning to Craig Counsell's team as a free agent this season.

Shaw was only hitting .191 with a .616 OPS and six homers in 56 games for the first-place Brewers, playing both first and third base.

The Red Sox showed interest in reuniting with Shaw in the offseason before committing to Marwin Gonzalez, who was recently designated for assignment.

Alex Speier was first with the news of the transaction.
