CLEVELAND (92.3 The Fan) -- Baker Mayfield: superstar in the making. And recruiter in action.
Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer joined Ken Carman and Anthony Lima live from the Super Bowl in Atlanta to talk about all she's observed this week with Mayfield, the Cleveland Browns quarterback phenom.
"He is going to be huge. It's already started," Cabot said. "I followed him around here on Radio Row the other day, just taking some photos, watching him a little bit and watching the impact that he's already having. And you just see: He's a budding superstar, and he's being treated like that here, being whisked around like an A-list celebrity."
Mayfield and Browns wide receiver Jarvis Landry also have been busy in schmoozing fellow NFL stars.
"I've talked to Jarvis and Baker about this a little bit: Those guys are trying to recruit and attract really good, top NFL talent," Cabot said. "Jarvis, doing so at the Pro Bowl. Baker and Jarvis both doing that here at the Super Bowl, saying, 'Hey, we're open for business. Come and join us.' I think the Browns recognize that they have to surround Baker with a lot of talent and support him in every way that they can.
"Everything right now is geared toward Baker," she added, "and they're hoping that he is in some ways their version of Tom Brady."
Also this week, during an appearance on "The Jim Rome Show," Landry was able to gift Cleveland cystic fibrosis ambassador Nick Kelly with two Super Bowl LIII tickets.
“It’s love, man,” Landry said. “You’re an inspiration to a lot of people.”
Landry’s high school girlfriend, Mya Marie Zimmer, had CF, resulting in Landry closely seeing and understanding the effects of the disease. He even reflects his support for a cure annually on his My Cause My Cleats this season.
Mayfield has been making the rounds at Radio Row and found the time to appear in a commercial with Tom Brady.
