The New Orleans Saints have kept busy in the aftermath of a Week 1 loss to the Cardinals, executing a flurry of roster moves that became official on Tuesday.
Those moves include:
- Waived: DE Fadil Diggs
- Signed to 53-man roster (from practice squad): TE Jack Stoll
- Signed to practice squad: QB Jake Haener & QB Hunter Dekkers
None of the moves were surprising, rather a weekly cycle that players and fans should probably get used to. The Saints have not been shy about waiving depth QBs to free up roster spots as necessary. Dekkers and Haener have been waived or signed multiple times this offseason.
The Diggs move came after he was signed to the active roster with the team in need of edge rusher depth due to an injury to Chase Young. It's likely he gets signed back to the practice squad if he goes unclaimed on waivers, as he did coming out of camp. It's unclear at this point whether Young will be available for Week 2.
Stoll began the season on practice squad simply due to a roster crunch, but he's maintained his status as the top blocking TE on this team, regardless. He was elevated, along with DT Jonah Williams, and played a significant role in Week 1.
The Saints might have more moves coming this week relative to safety Julian Blackmon, who is believed to have a season-ending shoulder injury. If that is the case he will likely be moved to IR ahead of Week 2, freeing up a roster spot. The Saints could potentially turn to practice squad safety Terrell Burgess with a bigger role, though they wouldn't necessarily have to sign him off the practice squad if they chose to elevate him to the active roster instead.
Another interesting roster move occurred elsewhere today, with the Cincinnati Bengals reportedly agreeing to a deal with former Saints second-round pick Isaiah Foskey, who didn't make final cuts this year and did not return on the practice squad.
