The New York Jets have officially started a new era at the quarterback position following the Monday trade that sent Sam Darnold to the Carolina Panthers.
While far from surprising, the move nonetheless marks a concession of defeat on yet another high draft pick for the Jets, with Darnold joining several other first-rounders who didn't pan out in New York.
The move also commits the new-ish regime of GM Joe Douglas and head coach Robert Saleh to a path that could prove to be a fateful one for their tenures, for better or worse.
The news ricocheted around social media, drawing responses from Jets players present and former, team owner Woody Johnson, Gang Green fans, and a host of other pundits.
Darnold, for his part, seemed to throw a party to mark his fresh start.
Here's what others were saying.
Jets star safety Marcus Maye, who is engaged in his own protracted contract negotiations with the team, didn't seem pleased.
Team owner Woody Johnson thanked Darnold for his service.
Former Jets standout turned ESPN analyst Damien Woody called it a "good trade" for the Jets, but warned that they have to convert the three draft picks they acquired for Darnold into useful players.
Former Jets wide receiver Robby Anderson, who signed with the Panthers last offseason, said he was "surprised" by the deal and pleased to be reunited with Darnold.
One editor noted the apparent connection between Darnold and Anderson during their time in New York.
Many in local and national media, including noted Jets fan Mike Greenberg, seem to predict a breakout for Darnold with the change of scenery.
Others weren't so sure.
As always, some saw the opportunity to rip former Jets coach Adam Gase.
Others made note of the significant overhauling of the Jets' roster under Douglas.
For Greenberg's daughter Nikki, the deal was just same ole Jets.
Even mayoral candidate Andrew Yang bid Darnold a farewell.
