Wichita police have identified the two people killed when a pickup truck drove onto a soccer field during youth games at the Stryker Sports Complex Saturday afternoon.
The victims were 6-year-old Cole Adrian and 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer, both of McPherson. Police said the two were not related.
The crash happened around 3:25 p.m. Saturday, October 17, at the complex in northeast Wichita. Investigators say a Chevrolet pickup driven by a 34-year-old woman was parked near the soccer fields before it drove onto a field, striking multiple children and adults.
Adrian and Schafer died at the scene.
Ten other people suffered traumatic injuries and were taken to area hospitals. The injured included five children, ages 5 to 9, and five adults ranging in age from 28 to 68. Their injuries were described as noncritical. An additional 61-year-old woman was hospitalized for medical complications unrelated to traumatic injuries.
The driver was taken into custody following the crash. After investigators interviewed more than 30 witnesses and consulted with the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office, she was released pending toxicology testing and a mechanical examination of the pickup.
No charges have been filed. Police continue investigating what led to the truck entering the field.
Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan expressed condolences to the victims’ families and said the tragedy had affected the broader community.
The incident also disrupted other events at the complex. The Kansas State High School Activities Association postponed its flag football state championship games, which were being held nearby.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
