Steve Harwell, lead singer of the legendary band Smash Mouth, has officially called it quits following the group's wild concert in New York over the weekend.
Smash Mouth's Harwell made a return to the stage earlier this month after taking a brief pause to take care of an ongoing heart issue, but now it seems his health challenges have become too much for his heart to bear.
This past weekend, fans witnessed Steve's odd behavior on stage where he was seen slurring words and screaming at the audience. A source close to the band told TMZ that immediately after the show, Harwell was fully aware of the fact that it has become impossible for him to continue to front the group during his health decline.
Regarding his exit, Harwell explained to TMZ that he had dreamed of being a rockstar, "performing in front of sold-out arenas" since he was a kid, and has been "so fortunate to live out that dream." Addressing his bandmates, Harwell says, "it’s been an honor performing with you all these years and I can’t think of anyone else I would have rather gone on this wild journey with."
The 54-year-old singer suffers from cardiomyopathy, which causes his heart to become enlarged, ultimately weakening his ability to efficiently pump blood. Apparently, Harwell had been going through an episode during their set in New York.
"To our loyal and amazing fans, thank you, all of this was possible because of you," Harwell added. "I’ve tried so hard to power through my physical and mental health issues, and to play in front of you one last time, but I just wasn't able to." Steve went on to thank "those who have kept 'All Star' relevant as one of the top memes on the internet today," adding, "I cannot wait to see what Smash Mouth accomplishes next and am looking forward to counting myself as one of the band’s newest fans."
