Conan Gray, rising pop sensation, recently named People’s “one to watch”, is sharing exactly who he is and what he’s about.
Gray’s debut album Kid Krow has been described as “the perfectly curated album for life in quarantine,” plus the singer has seen major success with his track “Heather” as it has gained wild viral popularity across Tik Tok. Essentially, Conan never expected that he would be releasing culture-defining music, yet here he is creating trends across the world wide web.
The Los Angeles based artist gets into the nitty-gritty of “Heather” and shares that the song is very personal even though it has been juxtaposed by the quirky and obsessive nature of Gen-Zers on Tik Tok. In the song Conan sings, “You gave her your sweater / It's just polyester / But you like her better / Wish I were Heather.”
Grey shares, “It's funny to think that something that was very personal to me has become some cultural moment, lingo and vernacular.” He also adds, “Now, to hear that the word 'Heather' is being used as something to empower other women, and make them feel good, it just makes me feel like there's some good things happening in the world."
Tik Tokers use the term “Heather” to define the person your own crush is crushing on. On Urban Dictionary “Heather” is explained as “when someone says that you're Heather, they mean that everybody can't help but like you.”
Conan also finally helps us get to the bottom of who the real Heather actually is. "There's been a lot of random people on the Internet being like, 'It's me. I'm the person that Conan wrote Heather about,'" explains Gray. "I'm just like, 'You're from Idaho. How would I have written Heather about you?’"
The singer admits that Heather has likely not heard the song. He shares, “Heather hasn't heard the song. I mean, maybe," he questions. "Maybe she has, but I wouldn't know. We're not like... We don't have matching friendship bracelets or something.” In fact, Conan hypothesizes that Heather may not even know who he is to this day.
