What curse? The Best New Artist winners at the GRAMMY Awards have been thriving over the past couple years, including names like Adele, Carrie Underwood, John Legend, and Maroon 5. What was once thought to be an unwelcomed win in the 70s and 80s, is now a recognition of true talent far beyond any one moment. Dua Lipa, Sam Smith, and Meghan Trainor have a few of the most anticipated albums of the year, and they all have won Best New Artist. 2012 winner Bon Iver is also up for Album of the Year at the 2020 GRAMMY Awards.
This year's batch of nominees range from chart-topping breakthroughs to hidden gems that deserve a bigger spotlight, but who will win one of the top awards of the night?
We want your vote for who you think will win Best New Artist at the 2020 GRAMMY Awards, but a first a look at each of this year's nominees.
Black Pumas
A mutual friend set up the duo of Black Pumas, as Adrian Quesada was looking for the perfect voice for his next project. He found Eric Burton, and they blend together for music that feels timeless and transported, dripping with spirit and soul.
Billie Eilish
Duh. Billie Eilish set all the records in 2019, and will probably shatter a few more before music's biggest night is over. The 18-year-old singer took music from her bedroom and turned it into a movement, as the unlikely hero gave a generation a voice.
Lil Nas X
"Old Town Road" could have easily been a footnote on the 2010s, but Lil Nas X decided to show there's much more to him than the Country Trap viral sensation. Sonically exploring new places on his debut EP, and proving to be much more than his debut single.
Lizzo
All bow down to the self-love Queen, who gave us endless joy and anthems through the past year, finally breaking through on sheer will and talent. The "Truth Hurts" singer has offered endless inspiration, captions, and courage through it all and has arrived as a star.
Maggie Rogers
Adding Pop sensibility to her mix of Folk and R&B, Maggie Rogers hit on something unique on Heard It In A Past Life, delivering on viral promise with passion and sincerity.
ROSALÍA
Some are still catching on to the talent of ROSALÍA, who has already been nominated for Best New Artist at the Latin GRAMMYs, as she inspires others across the US and delivers Pop from her own lane.
Tank and the Bangas
Soul, Hip Hop, and Jazz served to you straight out of New Orleans with the amazing voice of Tarriona "Tank" Ball stirring the pot. The group broke through in 2019, thanks to their excellent album, Green Balloon, surprising listeners with something different at every turn.
Yola
Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys helped bring the sound of Yola to life, wrapping her astounding voice with phenomenal flourishes and the warm glow of another era, but it's that unmistakable sound from Yola that only she can claim credit for, that sets her apart.
That's a lot of talent for one category, but you have to pick just one. Let us know who should win Best New Artist at the 2020 GRAMMY Awards, and be sure to tune in on Sunday January 26 at 8PM ET on CBS.
