“I’m nervous and excited for yall to see it butttt it’s finally here,” Megan wrote on Instagram about the Nneka Onuorah-directed doc that will follow whirlwind rise to stardom in Hip-Hop and beyond.
“Megan Thee Stallion: In Her Words offers unprecedented access to the multi-faceted woman behind the persona. Follow the Houston native’s journey on the road to stardom as she tenaciously navigates fame, grief, pressure, and success,” reads a description for the film that promises behind-the-scenes footage of the Houston Hottie both at work and at home. “The documentary unpacks Megan’s most vulnerable moments in a powerful way that allows fans to meet the real Megan Pete.”
Onuorah, who previously teamed up with Amazon MGM Studios for the 2022 reality competition series Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls, expressed, Megan’s “raw and beautiful spirit really shines through in the film.” Also noting, “She is a champion for all women who deserve their truth to be heard.”
After years of battles, cyphers, and hustling to make it, Megan had an explosive rise in 2019 with the success of her breakout single “Big Ole Freak” off her Tina Snow EP. Setting the stage for her follow-up mixtape, Fever, an introduction to her signature Hot Girl Summer, and we’ve never looked back. Sadly, early that same year, Megan lost her mother, followed by her great-grandmother two weeks later.
Despite the personal setbacks, Megan kept pushing forward, making music while also earning her bachelor’s degree in health administration from Texas Southern University. In March 2020, just as the world was shutting down, she blessed us with “Savage,” followed by a GRAMMY Award-winning remix featuring Beyoncé just one month later. 2020 also saw the release of two more career-defining records, the solo cut “Girls in the Hood” and her feature on Cardi B’s raunchy viral hit “WAP.”
In the midst of dropping albums, 2020’s Good News and 2022’s Traumazine, and her continued success, Megan was also dealing with lots of legal drama concerning the shooting allegations against Tory Lanez. By August 2023, Lanez was found guilty of shooting the rapper in her feet following an argument in July 2020, and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
The years-long ordeal saw Megan dealing with constant scrutiny from the public and industry figures, and though she’s lyrically responded and spoken her mind in a collection of interviews, with In Her Words, Megan finally gets to control her own narrative — about everything.
