A woman who reportedly refused to wear a mask was tasered by police during a brawl on a Spirit Airlines flight from Newark to Puerto Rico last weekend.

Chaos erupted onboard the Spirit Airlines flight after it landed at Luis Munoz Marin Airport in San Juan around 7 p.m. Sunday.

The woman “provoked an incident by acting in what witnesses called an aggressive, hostile, and defiant behavior,” police told CBS News correspondent David Begnaud.

A passenger on the flight told Begnaud the woman had refused to wear a mask and was tasered by police during a brawl after the plane landed.

“The woman who threw the first punch is allegedly the same person who refused to wear a mask who then ended up being tased by police because of her belligerent behavior which is seen on video here,” Begnaud tweeted.

However, another passenger, Alfredo, told Begnaud that the woman was attacked first.

“Alfredo says during the flight, a young man was moving about the plane, switching seats and not wearing a mask. Flights attendants, according to Alfredo, instructed the man to stop switching seats and to wear his mask. The man didn’t stop. When the plane landed police were called,” Begnaud tweeted.

Passenger Alfredo told Begnaud that three women who were with that man were also moving around without masks while the seatbelt sign was on. He said flight attendants asked the women to stay seated with their masks on.

Upon landing, three men “began yelling homophobic and racial slurs” at the women, who are Black, the passenger told Begnaud, adding that one of the men hit the woman, who then threw punches.

The woman ended up spending a night in jail, with her bail set at $150,000, according to
