Passenger gets stuck on cruise ship waterslide 159 feet in the air

A new TikTok video poses the question: “what would happen if someone got trapped in one of those cruise ship waterslides?”

As the viral “nothing beats a Jet2 holiday” sound (usually paired with videos of travel failures) plays, the video posted by @kaylameerzjewski on Sept. 19 shows a woman suspended in a clear tube over rolling waters. She was on her back and apparently trying to use her arms and legs to push herself through the slide with little success.

“She’s literally stuck,” a voice in the background commented.

While people in the comments were clearly concerned about the passenger, the caption also said #allsokay in addition to #scary. By Tuesday, the video racked up more than 250,000 likes.

For all those wondering what cruise has the “waterslide trap” feature, we should note that the video does not specify what ship the incident took place on. People magazine reported that the exterior of the vessel “closely resembles Norwegian Cruise Line’s Bliss, which was on a seven-day, round-trip Alaskan cruise off the coast of Canada on Sept. 19,” citing Cruisemapper.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s website does feature information about something called the “Ocean Loops” described as a “double loop slide” that looks like what is shown in the video. A fact sheet about the Bliss said the slide “hangs 11 feet off the side of the ship and 159 feet above the ocean.” Passengers must be at least 48 inches tall and between 120 to 300 pounds to take a spin on the Ocean Loops, per the cruise line site.

“This is not the first time a passenger has gotten stuck in the Ocean Loops,” said People. “Previous videos on social media show similar incidents where the rider isn’t able to pass the initial loop, sending them backwards.”

One commenter on the recent TikTok video said the slide has an emergency hatch for such situations. Norwegian Cruise Line did not immediately respond to People’s request for comment on the matter, the outlet said.

Getting stuck in a waterslide isn’t the only thing cruise ship passengers have had to worry about recently. Just last week, Audacy reported on a brawl that broke out near a kid’s pool area on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship.
