Chiefs acquire wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins from Titans

Tennessee gets a conditional fifth-round pick in return from Kansas City

Kansas City, Mo. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - After losing a couple of receiving pieces over the course of the 2024 season due to injury, the Kansas City Chiefs have made a move to bolster the position as they continue their undefeated run.

The Chiefs have announced the acquisition of DeAndre Hopkins from the Tennessee Titans in exchange for a conditional fifth-round pick that could become a fourth-round pick. ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter was the first to report the trade.

The five-time Pro Bowl wideout and three-time AP First-Team All-Pro joins the 6-0 Chiefs, who have already lost Marquise "Hollywood" Brown (shoulder) to a season-ending injury in the preseason, as well as Rashee Rice (knee) last month to a season-ending injury.

The 32-year-old has spent parts of the last two seasons with the Titans, where he accounted for 90 receptions for 1,230 yards and eight touchdowns. Most of that production came last season when Hopkins put up 1,057 receiving yards on 75 catches and seven touchdowns.

Through six games this season in Tennessee, Hopkins saw his production and snap count drop drastically, only being on the field for 47% of the offensive snaps on a 1-5 Titans squad.

Hopkins was originally a first-round pick 27th overall) of the Houston Texans in the 2013 NFL Draft out of Clemson University.

In his seven seasons spent in Houston, Hopkins became one of the most dynamic weapons in the league at the wide receiver position, reeling in 632 passes for 8,602 yards and 54 touchdowns. His best season with the Texans, arguably, came during his 2017 season, where he caught 96 passes for 1,378 yards (14.4. yards per-reception) and a league-best 13 touchdowns.

Between his 2017 and 2019 seasons, Hopkins accounted for 4,116 receiving yards on 315 grabs and 31 touchdowns. That production helped Hopkins earn three-straight years of First-Team All-Pro nods.

Then during the 2020 offseason, the Texans traded Hopkins and a fourth-round pick to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for running back David Johnson, a second-round pick and fourth-round pick.

It seemed like an instant match between Hopkins and the Cardinals, as he put up a 1,407-yard season through the air on 115 receptions and six touchdowns. It earned Hopkins his fifth-career Pro Bowl nod and a spot on the AP Second-Team All-Pro team.

However, his final two years in Arizona were plagued with injuries, as he only played in 19 games and caught a combined 106 passes for 1,289 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Hopkins' first appearance as a member of the Chiefs could come this Sunday afternoon in Las Vegas against the Raiders at Allegiant Stadium.
