Living History: Ferguson Mayor Ella Jones

For Black History Month, KMOX’s Carol Daniel is speaking with St. Louisans who are making Black history today. The seventh installment features Ella Jones, the first Black woman to be mayor of Ferguson.

Mayor Ella Jones talked with Carol about her past as a chemist, how she made the shift to politics, and what it was like growing up in New Orleans.

“It was different growing up in New Orleans because when I grew up, we had the black school for Black people. And the school for the white people — it was very segregated,” Jones said. “So by the time I made it to senior high, we started protesting, you know. I tell people all the time, it's good to protest, but let it have a positive result that's going to affect everyone's life.”
