OAK PARK (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The end of a wrestling match at Oak Park River Forest High School has led to a police investigation after the boy who lost sucker punched the winner, breaking his nose.
14-year-old Cooper Corder, the winner, extended his hand to shake with his opponent, Hafid Alicea.
Alicea then punched Corder in the face, knocking him to the mat.
Corder and his mother, Jillian Hill, spoke to CBS 2.
"I didn't want to retaliate, obviously, and I didn't want to get hit again," said high school wrestler Cooper Corder. "As soon as it happened, my first reaction is, 'I gotta ball up. I got to try and get away from what just happened."
"I didn't really understand until he was on the ground," said his mother Jillian Hill. "I didn't really understand until he was on the ground. And, there was probably a three or four second delay of my brain just processing what just happened."
The wrestlers were taking part in the Beat the Streets Chicago tournament.
"We are very disappointed,” Executive Director Mike Powell said.
