Chicago police shoot, kill 13-year-old; family urges public to 'remain peaceful'
CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayor Lightfoot and Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown are expected to talk more Monday about last week's controversial fatal police shooting of a 13-year-old boy.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Supt. David Brown will be speaking about public safety at New Life Church in the Little Village neighborhood. The two have called on the Civilian Office of Police Accountability to release police body camera video of the shooting and killing of 13-year-old Adam Toledo.
COPA said it will show the video to the family this week.
Meanwhile, there'll be another prayer vigil Monday afternoon in the boy's memory at 24th and Sawyer.
According to the Sun-Times, Adam Toledo's family responded to a police alert alleging gang members are being encouraged to shoot at police in retaliation.
"This report, if true, is extremely disturbing," Adeena Weiss Ortiz, the family's attorney, said in the statement. "Let me be perfectly clear, the Toledo family condemns violence against police and all other members of the community."
In a statement released Sunday, the family condemned any calls for violence in the wake of the shooting and urged the public "to remain respectful, peaceful, and law abiding in expressing their grief over Adam's death."
Adam's mother, Elizabeth Toledo, added: "No one has anything to gain by inciting violence.
"Adam was a sweet and loving boy," she said. "He would not want anyone else to be injured or die in his name."
Adam Toledo was killed in what Chicago police said was an "armed confrontation" on 23rd and Sawyer in the Little Village community.
