"There it is. You can see it. OK folks, get to your safe place," said Meteorologist Margaret Orr. "We've got a definite tornado."

"It's really racing. You can see some rotation around the main tornado. This looks like a wedge tornado... another spinning around it," Orr narrated as the tornado moved east across the city. "Folks, this is something I'd hoped I'd never see."

The National Weather Service on Wednesday said two tornadoes, one in St. Bernard Parish and another in Lancombe, were confirmed by doppler radar and video. The most significant damage occurred in Arabi, where one person was killed and several others were injured.

"Three teams from NWS New Orleans/Baton Rouge will be conducting surveys today to determine the strength (the EF-scale and peak estimated winds) and track (length and width) of the tornadoes," the agency wrote on Twitter. "Additional tornadoes are sometimes discovered in the days following the event as new information becomes available."

Officials are just starting to survey the damage. Louisiana activated 300 National Guard personnel on Wednesday to assist St. Bernard Parish with route clearance, security, and engineering support, the Associated Press reported.
