Congress is exempt from Biden's vaccine mandate for federal workers

The executive order President Joe Biden put in place last week mandating the COVID-19 vaccine for all federal workers will not apply to members of Congress, the federal court system, or their staffers.

The order that Biden handed out on Thursday drops the option for federal workers and contractors to get the COVID-19 vaccine and only allows some religious and disability exemptions.

However, the only federal employees affected by this mandate are those who work in the executive branch. The order does not apply to the legislative or judicial branches of the government, the White House confirmed, Fox News reported.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi shared in April that Congress couldn't mandate the vaccine among members and said it was a "matter of privacy."

In August, this sentiment changed as she signaled she would be open to mandating the vaccine, but only after the Food and Drug Administration fully approved it. Still, she has not gone back to the topic following the FDA approving Pfizer's vaccine late last month.

There is no precise number of how many Senate and House members have been vaccinated, but estimates remain high, with many saying they have taken the shot.

Last week Biden also announced a vaccine mandate for private businesses that have over 100 employees. This mandate is expected to affect millions of Americans as the Delta variant continues to rip throughout the country.
