Veterans, are you ready for school? Now is the time to do your homework!
Yes, there is homework prior to getting started. It involves a few calls, potentially some online documentation and most of all a bit of research! There are steps to take, but also there are questions to ask along the way.
STEP 1: Contact the VA and complete the FAFSA. The VA will help you to better understand what benefits and how many you have available and how to apply for them. This link will help: The FAFSA application may open grants and scholarship options you did not know were available.
STEP 2: Dig deep into what you want! Once you know what you have available, it is time to start asking yourself some questions regarding the degree that you want to pursue. What do I want to do? What do I like to do? What type of degree is best suited for my long-term goals?
STEP 3: Research the schools! There are many schools out there and most offer a variety of degree options. So how do you know what is best for you? Here are some basic questions to ask. Do they have advisors available to help you from start to finish? Are they regionally accredited? Do they offer credit for military service? Are there military rates or does the school participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program? If desiring a technical degree such as Cyber Security, does the school offer industry certifications?
When researching universities to attend, University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC), is one such school where the answer to all these questions is a resounding yes! Other reasons why UMGC is the right choice for veterans and military-affiliated personnel:
