KNX Hero and SoCal surgeon marks his 400th living donor liver transplant during the pandemic

Despite facing a number of challenges during the pandemic, a Southern California surgeon hit a significant career milestone in the surgery room. He's our KNX Hero of the Week, and he's saving lives, one transplant at a time.

Dr. Yuri Genyk has literally saved hundreds of lives. He has performed over 400 liver transplant surgeries. Each one of those representing a life extended, thanks to a living organ donor, and the talented hands of Dr Genyk.

"You have to have something in your life to be proud of," says Dr. Genyk. "Having all these patients that we were able to impact, looking back, it makes me proud of the way I've spent my life."

Dr. Genyk started his medical career in Ukraine. His work eventually landed him in the LA-area. He carries a list of important titles, and they include Professor of Clinical Surgery, Division Chief and Surgical Director of abdominal transplants at Keck Medicine of USC. He has similar titles at Children's Hospital - Los Angeles.

Over the years, Dr. Genyk has pioneered the practice of using a live donor to transplant the liver. His work has been ground-breaking. Dr. Genyk takes part of a liver in a healthy person and puts into a sick child or adult. The surgery is very delicate, but almost anyone can be donor.

"The liver can live forever, because of its ability to regenerate," explains Dr. Genyk. "The only way to bridge the gap between demand and supply, is to promote living donor transplants."

There are hundreds of liver transplants each year in the Los Angeles area. But, at the same time, hundreds of people die, waiting for a transplant.

Fellow colleague Dr. Linda Sher calls Dr. Genyk one-of-a-kind. "He is a very unique individual, in that he is multi-talented. He has incredible, incredible technical skills, that make him - not just an elite surgeon, but elite in his own field."

"It makes me feel very blessed... to serve people. And, that's what we are here for," says Dr. Genyk. "It's not like we are heroes, we are just doing our job."

And it’s a job very well done! With over 400 liver transplant surgeries, Dr. Yuri Genyk is our KNX Hero of the Week!
