Justice Department plans to send monitors to Texas on Election Day

The U.S. Department of Justice has announced it will send staffers from its Civil Rights Division to 27 states on Tuesday to monitor compliance with federal voting rights laws. Texas is one of those states.

The department plans to send monitors to eight counties in Texas: Atascosa, Bexar, Dallas, Frio, Harris, Hays, Palo Pinto, and Waller.

Their statement also indicates that Civil Rights Division personnel will be available to receive questions and complaints from the public related to possible violations of federal voting rights laws - either through the department's website or by phone at 1-800-253-3931.

The Texas Secretary of State's Office has issued a statement noting that US DoJ monitors are barred from polling places in Texas.

"Justice Department monitors are not permitted inside a polling place where Ballots are being cast or a central counting station where ballots are being counted," Texas Secretary of State Jane Nelson wrote.

Several other states have also indicated that they will not allow the Justice Department monitors inside their polling places.

The U.S. Department of Justice previously sent monitors to Dallas, Harris and Waller Counties in Texas in 2022 and Harris and Waller Counties in 2020.
