Fort Worth Zoo's Mtoto the rhino keeps her cool in the Summer heat
By Curt Lewis Aug 03, 2021
We all have our own ways of coping with the Summer heat. But Mtoto, a Fort Worth Zoo rhinoceros, has it all figured out.
Mtoto is a 32-year-old Southern Black Rhinoceros who's always a favorite of zoo goers. To cool off, she finds whatever mud-hole she can and simply rolls around until her hide is covered with mud.
Zoo officials say the mud is very beneficial because rhino skin is actually sensitive to the sun's rays. So, the mud not only acts as Nature's sun screen, it also keeps pesky insects from bothering Mtoto and her herd-mates.
And Mtoto also cools off by enjoying refreshing cantaloupes and other summer treats. She's just a little messier than most of us.
