Trump proposes the US and Canada merge as Trudeau leaves office

President-elect Donald Trump is once again pitching the idea of the United States and Canada merging following the resignation of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Trump shared his thoughts on Truth Social on Monday, saying there would be no tariffs if the two countries became one.

“If Canada merged with the U.S., there would no Tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be TOTALLY SECURE from the threat of the Russian and Chinese Ships that are constantly surrounding them,” Trump wrote. “Together, what a great Nation it would be!!!”

Trudeau shared on Monday that he would resign from his office before general elections later this year, which polling showed he would lose in a landslide.

Trump and Trudeau’s Liberal Party have also faced rising tensions as Trump has continued to threaten the country with tariffs.

“This country deserves a real choice in the next election, and it has become clear to me that if I’m having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election,” Trudeau said.

Trump’s suggestion that Canada merge with the US is not new. He’s said for some time that it should become the “51st State” of the US. He also shared that many Canadians would “LOVE” to join the US.

In his post, he noted that the merger would be beneficial for the US because it would “no longer suffer” the “massive Trade Deficits” and subsidies that it provides Canada.

“Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned,” Trump said.

Trudeau has been the Prime Minister of Canada for the last nine years and has led his Liberal Party for 11.

In recent weeks he’s faced criticism for his confrontation with Trump over the proposed 25% tariff plan, as well as other issues the country has faced. Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland also recently resigned, criticizing Trudeau in her resignation, saying he was playing “costly political gimmicks” in response to Trump’s threats.

Trump has taken several shots at Trudeau over the last month, dubbing him Canada’s “governor” after they had dinner at his Mar-a-Lago estate.

Trudeau has said that if Trump were to impose his tariffs on Canada, his nation would be forced to retaliate.
