Walmart has announced that it is recalling more than 12,000 cartons of chicken broth in nine different states over concerns that the packaging of the product was compromised.
According to a recall notice from the Food and Drug Administration, the recalled product is the Great Value brand of chicken broth that was sold in 48-ounce containers.
While the recall was first initiated on Dec. 11, the FDA did not publish the notice until Jan. 8.
The recall was issued because of a “potential for packaging failures that could compromise the sterility of the product, resulting in spoilage.”
The stores where the recalled cartons were sent include Arkansas, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas.
Walmart shared in a statement with Fox News that a total of 242 stores were affected in the nine states.
In total, 2,023 cases were included in the recall, with each case containing six products, for a total of 12,138 cartons of broth being recalled.
The products have a “best used by” date of March 25, 2026, and a UPC code of “007874206684.”
There have not been any reported illnesses from consuming the product at this time.
“The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority,” a Walmart spokesperson said in a statement. “As soon as we were made aware of the issue, we took action to remove all impacted products from the select, impacted stores. We are continuing to work with the supplier to investigate.”
Those who believe they have a recalled carton of the broth are advised to throw it away and request a full refund.
