Today almost a year and half after the death of Elijah McClain, Aurora Police Chief Vanessa Wilson offered an apology. “The bottom line is Elijah McClain should still be here today,” Aurora Police Chief Vanessa Wilson said during a news conference. “Nothing I can say here today or changes that I’ve made or changes I will continue to make will bring him back and for that, I’m extremely sorry.” An independent investigation into Elijah's death while in police custody determined that the officers who put him in a choke-hold and injected him with ketamine did not have justification for stopping Elijah or for using force to detain him.
Elijah McClain was 23 years old and on his way home from a convenience store when Aurora Police stopped him. Elijah told the officers that he was an introvert and to not touch him. The officers wrestled him to the ground and put him in a choke hold. Eventually they called for EMS and injected him with ketamine. On August 30, 2019, six days after the incident Elijah McClain died from injuries sustained that night.
As of today, no one has been charged with a crime relating to Elijah's death. The Colorado State Attorney General is currently investigating the case and has called for a grand jury to determine if there is enough evidence to charge anyone for Elijah's demise.
