As far as I know, the only people that don’t love Maya Angelou are people that don’t know about her. GOOGLE HER.
She is a beloved icon and worthy of praise.
Her keystone work, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” remains one of the shining examples of literary works today, and transcended race when it was released in the 1960’s. Angelou also recited a poem at President Bill Clinton’s first inauguration in 1993, and President Barack Obama awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011.
So that should set the tone for the series of what the new quarters seem to be: honoring American women that have been trailblazers in our history.
Besides Maya Angelou, there is Sally Ride (the first American woman to fly in space) and Billie Jean King (the tennis icon).
According to The New York Times, the coins are part of a new U.S. Mint’s American Women Quarters Program that will feature as many as 20 American women. The series will start next year and will be released over the next four years. They also report that “Each woman will be honored on the reverse, or tails, side of the coins, which will enter circulation in January as part of the American Women Quarters Program. The heads side of the coin will feature a new design of George Washington.”
You don’t have to be a collector of coins to know this is a pretty dope concept. For more info click HERE.
