'Clap Because We Care' initiative applauds essential workers, literally

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — An effort to literally applaud essential workers in Philadelphia is underway.

It's called "Clap Because We Care PHL."

Every night at 7, people are being asked to go outside or open up a window or door, and clap your hands and cheer for those who are required to work at places like hospitals, post offices, grocery stores transportation centers and police and fire departments.

Co-organizer Michelle Munyikwa encourages participants to document your appreciation and share it on social media.

"If you can record yourself, a video or a picture, and tag it with #ClapBecauseWeCarePHL then we will have an archive of all the different things that people are doing in your community."

Similar efforts have been taking place in Europe and in American cities such as New York and Boston.
