According to a recent Surgeon General’s advisory, teens who spend more than three hours a day on social media face twice the risk of experiencing mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety.

The advisory comes as youth mental health remains in a state of crisis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 5 children have a mental, emotional or behavioral disorder, and only about 20% of those children receive care from a mental health provider.

With back to school season in full swing, Dr. Archana Dubey, Chief Medical Officer of UnitedHealthcare of California, shares some tips for protecting children and teens' mental health from harmful social media use.
