A Wind Chill Advisory is in effect until 9 a.m. Friday...
A mix of freezing rain and sleet began to fall in the Austin metro shortly after midnight, and will gradually come to an end this afternoon, clearing west to east.
The wintry precipitation came after moderate to heavy rainfall late Wednesday evening, which prompted a Flood Advisory to be issued for eastern portions of Travis County.
Temperatures will stay below freezing throughout the day on Thursday, possibly rising above the freezing mark Friday afternoon, before another hard freeze Saturday morning and a gradual warming trend takes hold. A Wind Chill Advisory has been issued for wind chill values that are expected to drop to zero or just below into the early morning hours on Friday.
Virtually all of the area's school districts and universities canceled in-person classes on Thursday, with some universities transitioning to virtual learning. Many will also remain closed on Friday, with conditions not expected to improve significantly.
The overnight storms created some issues for area power providers, which were then hampered by ice and other issues related to the wintry precipitation. At 8 a.m., more than 1,300 customers were without power, with crews expecting to restore most of those within an hour or two.
