Though he now has several romantic comedies under his belt, Matthew McConaughey recently shared that he didn’t say “alright alright alright” immediately to one of his better-known roles.
In an oral history for the 2003 hit “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” the Texan-born actor told Vanity Fair that he initially was not sure if he was going to take the part of the love interest in the movie.
“I remember considering whether I was going to do it or not one night while on a walk down Sunset Boulevard when suddenly, this guy comes up out of nowhere to me—he was a fortune teller guru [and] goes, “Can I tell you your fortune real quick?” I was like, “Yeah, man. Sure,” the Oscar winner said.
The man continued, telling McConaughey that there was a movie he was “considering right now. It’s a romantic comedy. You have to do this or it will be one of the biggest regrets of your life. It is going to be a blast, it is going to be an incredible experience and it is going to make a bunch of money.”

McConaughey teased that he thought at the time that perhaps the man had been hired by the studio to convince him to sign onto the movie, but whether or not it was fate or a set-up, the interaction made him take the opportunity more seriously. “I think I even accepted the offer the next day,” he noted.
In December, Kate Hudson opened up about how much she wanted McConaughey to play her co-lead in the movie. “We had an energy together, I wanted to play with him,” she said. “It felt kinetic. We both have a competitive spirit, we’re both super athletic. We like to push each other and I just love Matthew’s commitment to everything; he’s razor-focused. What you think he is, he is.”
