Along with this year's impressive list of nominees, there will also be a number of Special Merit Award honorees feted during GRAMMYs weekend, including singer and songwriter Bobby McFerrin, blues singer Ma Rainey, CHIC's Nile Rodgers, rapper Slick Rick, The Supremes, Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart, and lastly, Seattle Alt-rockers Nirvana.

“The Academy is proud to celebrate this diverse slate of influential music people spanning numerous genres and crafts as our 2023 Special Merit Awards honorees,” said Harvey Mason jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, in a statement. “Each creator on this list has made an impact on our industry — from technical to creative achievements — representing the breadth of music’s diverse community. We’re excited to celebrate this group of legends next month that continues to inspire and shape the music world.”

This Special Merit Award Ceremony will be presented by vote of the Recording Academy’s National Trustees to performers who, during their lifetimes, have made creative contributions of outstanding artistic significance, and will take place over GRAMMYs weekend in Los Angeles on February 4.

The 2023 GRAMMY Awards returns to Los Angeles' Arena on Sunday, February 5, 2023, and will broadcast live on CBS and stream live and on-demand on Paramount+ at 8-11:30PM ET / 5-8:30PM PT.
