For Siwa, speaking to Demi was a childhood dream come true. The former Dance Mom star explains, “I’ve watched you forever!” But now, JoJo feels an even deeper bond to the “Dancing With the Devil Singer,” after coming out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community.

Siwa came out in January of this year and a few months later Demi also came out as non-binary, using “they/them” pronouns. Siwa beams as she says, “It was like Pride news, and it was always me and you right there, and I was like ‘thank you! I love it!’”
When asked if she had any apprehension to come out, Siwa revealed that she didn’t feel nervous but adds, “the only thing that held me back from telling the world right away was my girlfriend’s family, and my girlfriend.”
“I wanted to make sure that like she was ready, because like you always know… I always knew with me, but I always said like I’m not going to do anything with it or be like ‘hey by the way I’m gay….’ I was always like I’ll just wait until I actually have a girlfriend or have a girl that I’m in love with and then I’ll do something with it.”
Prior to dating Kylie Prew, JoJo was best friends with her now girlfriend. Siwa explains that because of their prior friendship, Prew already knew what it would be like to delve into Siwa’s lifestyle once making their relationship public.
Jojo smirks when she tells us, “It kind of just happened. The internet kinda outted me for me and then all I had to do was confirm it.”
After coming out publicly, the actress, singer and dancer said she shared a moment of doubt with Prew, saying, “I don’t know if I should have done that or not?” But JoJo noted that Prew was quick to reassure and encourage her.
“I’m so proud and so happy,” Siwa emphatically says. “What I told her was ‘I share everything with the world’…the whole world has just known everything about me, to not tell them this would be pointless.”
Working for Nickelodeon, Siwa was thrilled that the network not only supported her but worked to quickly create content that educates young people about the spectrum of sexual orientation and identity.
Now stepping into her own identity and so far experiencing a positive coming out journey, JoJo is focused on building her empire. Getting her start as a dancer on reality TV, she explains, “I think I never wanted to be just a… I never wanted to be just a dancer. I never wanted to be just a singer. I never wanted to be just in front of the camera. I wanted to also be behind the camera, also perform, also act.”
