“If you can’t already tell by our award winners and our performers, the music business is going Country,” Del Rey said on stage during the event while honoring record producer Jack Antonoff. “We’re going Country. It’s happening. That’s why Jack has followed me to Muscle Shoals, Nashville, Mississippi, over the last four years.”
Del Rey and Antonoff have teamed up for Lasso, which will be Del Rey’s 10th studio LP. The “Dark Paradise” singer seems delighted about the partnership, referring to Antonoff as “one in a million” whose “instincts are unique.”
Antonoff has also famously collaborated with Taylor Swift throughout her illustrious career. His name is attached to hits such as “Cruel Summer,” “Karma” and “Anti-Hero.” Swift is no stranger to switching musical genres, which has proven quite lucrative for her, so Del Rey transitioning from Alternative Pop to Country with Antonoff by her side could be a wise move for the artist.
Del Rey has been churning out music as of late, with Lasso coming out later this year, the release of Did You know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd last year, and prior to that, Chemtrails over the Country Club and Blue Banisters both dropped in 2021. Her most recent album has earned the singer-songwriter five GRAMMY nominations at this Sunday’s award ceremony. She is up for Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Alternative Music Album, Best Alternative Music Performance, and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance alongside Jon Batiste. Despite 11 nominations throughout her career, Del Rey has yet to take home a GRAMMY trophy. This year might be the year, and by next year, we might see her name in a whole new category – Country.
Del Rey has been teasing her grand Country entrance for quite some time now. She traveled to Nashville last year and performed a cover of one of the most famous Country music songs of all time, Tammy Wynette’s “Stand By Your Man.” She’s also covered Elvis’ “Unchained Melody” and John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads.”
A few weeks ago, Del Rey gifted her Instagram followers with a snippet of an unreleased song titled, “Henry, Come On.” Country music producer Luke Laird is tagged in the caption of the post. Laird is known for his work on Kacey Musgraves' “Butterflies” as well as many other Country hits for numerous artists.
With all the recent hype, fans are eager to see how much Country flair Del Rey will bring as she returns to the Coachella stage for the first time in a decade this April. Not only has it been 10 years since she’s performed at the festival, this marks the first time she will be a headliner, setting her up for a huge year ahead of Lasso’s release.
