Speaking to PEOPLE, Hopper said his dad, Sean Penn, was “strict” when he was young but he was also always “getting into trouble.” He did say that his dad’s mellowed out in his older age.

“I knew that my dad was known and my mom (Robin Wright Penn) was known. And we’d go to movie sets. But when we moved back to [Los Angeles], things were said to me in school. It just made me feel awkward!”

Hopper, 29, has acted with his father in “Flag Day” in 2021 and as he’s aged he said he’s learned to appreciate his father more.

“When he went to Haiti (after 2010 earthquake), I’d never seen that side of him. It was just immediate, and he was really smart with it. Emergency mode is his place. I feel like he’s the calmest when chaos is going on. It’s really great.”

Hopper relayed he rarely reads his dad’s texts because they’re as long as “novels.” The two usually catch up on FaceTime.

He also remains close to mother Robin Wright and says “our humor is the same!”
