Just before taking the stage to host this year’s Billboard Music Awards on Sunday, Nick Jonas stopped by to Check In with Audacy’s Julia, to fill us in on all the things we can expect from the 2021 BBMAs, plus share some details around his newly announced Remember This Jonas Brothers tour.
This will be Jonas’ first time hosting the prestigious award show, but he says that he and his brothers always watched the BBMAs growing up, he adds, “the first time we attended it was like a whole new world to us. So exciting.”

Last year, during the award show the Jonas Brothers brought home three trophies leaving Nick to wonder whether a mistake had been made. Now prominently displayed in his home, Nick has been using the trophies in all the social media promos he’s been doing for Sunday’s show.
“'Sucker' was the Jonas Brothers’ first song to ever top the Billboard Hot 100. “We had a sense that it would be in the top 10,” explains Nick. But the band didn’t find out that the song had taken the number one spot until their label and management sent them a plaque that said “‘Sucker’ #1’” after the accomplishment was announced to the public. Nick muses, “it was a pretty cool way to find out.”
In terms of the artists nominated at this year’s BBMAs that Nick can’t get enough of, the Spaceman artist says, “I think Olivia Rodrigo is really killing it, loving what she’s doing.” He adds, “obviously The Weeknd.
I think he made one of the best albums of the last 20 years honestly.”
From new discoveries to keeping old favorites in rotation, the artist tells us, “As a coach on The Voice I have to constantly keep up with what’s hot and what’s happening in music, and then also think of the classics and what might work for the artist I’m working with. So I have a very eclectic playlist that I sort of go to and it’s constantly changing.”
After season 20 of The Voice wraps up Nick will give his coach’s chair over to Ariana Grande. “I’m so excited for her. I think she’s going to kill it,” beams Nick. He adds, “I love that they keep the energy fresh and it just continues to evolve and the dynamic between coaches evolves.”
Just as Jonas passes the baton to Grande, the Jonas Brothers will embark on a summer tour that they’ve just announced, emphasizing that they are all so “ready to get back out to the fans.”
With the announcement of their “Remember This Tour” Nick says “it’s only natural” that the brothers have a lot of new things lined up as well, including new music. He tells fans to, “keep their eyes and ears open.”
Being eager to get back on stage with Joe and Kevin, Nick also shares that they are so excited to bring “our friend Kelsea Ballerini too out as our special guest on the tour, I think it’s just going to be such a great time.”
The 2021 Billboard Music Awards happen live this Sunday, May 20 at 8PM ET / 5PM PT on NBC
