Alex Cora talks about vaccination controversy

TORONTO - The conversation after the Red Sox' walk-off loss to the Blue Jays Tuesday continued be dominated by Tanner Houck talk. More specifically, how the Sox closer wasn't available due to his vaccination status.

A piece of the discussion involved what the Red Sox might do when the teams' met at season's end at Rogers Centre, or in the postseason. (If the season ended Wednesday, the Sox would take on theBlue Jays in Toronto for their first playoff game.)

Talking with the media prior to Wednesday night's series finale, manager Alex Cora seemed to defuse some of the concerns, hinting that the status of at least one of the non-vaccinated Red Sox would be changing before the team's next trip to Canada.

"I talk to the players whenever I have to talk to them. I respect their decisions. At the end of the day, the [Blue Jays] are a great example. They didn’t make excuses last year when they played in Dunedin, Buffalo and Toronto," Cora said. "I’m not going to make excuses. You give me 26, we’ll do our best to get 27 outs and win. It’s not perfect, right, and we all know that. At the end of the day, it is what it is and we’re going to keep moving forward.”

Then Cora punctuated his answer to the vaccination question with, "We still talk. We’ll see. I do believe when we come to September, it’s gonna be different."

Asked if he could be talking about a change in Canada's policy, the manager responded, "No, I don’t get into politics, no, no, no, I barely know the Puerto Rican ones. I do believe for September, it’s going to change, from our end. ... Let’s leave it at that. I bet you a dollar it’s going to change."

While Cora wouldn't define who or what he was talking about, it is known that Houck, Jarren Duran and Kutter Crawford are not vaccinated, with Chris Sale revealing back in February he also hadn't - at that point - gotten the vaccine.
