Bruins trade Charlie Coyle to Avs for package highlighted by Casey Mittelstadt

The Boston Bruins have made their third trade of the week, this one the biggest yet. As first reported by Fluto Shinzawa of The Athletic, the Bruins are trading veteran forward Charlie Coyle to the Colorado Avalanche.

According to TSN's Pierre LeBrun, the Bruins are getting Casey Mittelstadt, Will Zellers and a 2025 second-round pick in return, while also sending a 2026 fifth-round pick to the Avs. The Bruins and Avalanche later confirmed that is indeed the trade.

Coyle, 33, has one year left on his contract after this season with a $5.25 million cap hit. After a career-high 60 points last season, Coyle’s production has plummeted to 22 points (15 goals, 7 assists) in 64 games this season.

Mittelstadt, a 26-year-old center, has 34 points (11 goals, 23 assists) in 63 games this season, which is also a drop-off from his 59 and 57 points in the previous two seasons, respectively. Mittelstadt, who was originally a first-round pick (8th overall) of the Buffalo Sabres in 2017, is signed for two more years after this with a cap hit of $5.75 million.

Zellers, an 18-year-old center/wing, was a third-round pick (76th overall) in 2024. He has 58 points (37 goals, 21 assists) in 40 games for the USHL Green Bay Gamblers this season, putting him first in the league in goals and second in points. He is committed to play at the University of North Dakota next season, having previously been committed to Boston University.

The Bruins now have two second-round picks in this June's draft, having also acquired one from Edmonton (originally St. Louis') in the Trent Frederic trade.
