The Boston Bruins have freed up some money and a roster spot in net, trading goalie Joonas Korpisalo to the New York Rangers for forward Kalle Vaisanen and a 2028 fourth-round pick.
The Bruins did not retain any money on Korpisalo's contract, which has two years left at a $3 million cap hit.
The move opens the door for Michael DiPietro to take over the Bruins' backup job behind Jeremy Swayman. DiPietro, 27, has been the AHL Goalie of the Year each of the last two seasons, including a 34-8-1 record and .930 save percentage this past season.
DiPietro is signed for $812,500 through this season, so the Bruins save nearly $2.2 million against the cap by moving Korpisalo. They now have just under $10 million in cap space as of 1 p.m. Wednesday. Free agency opened Wednesday at noon.
Vaisanen had four points in 51 AHL games for the Hartford Wolf Pack last year. He is signed through this season on a two-way contract and does not need to clear waivers to be sent to Providence.
