Colin Cowherd doesn’t think Mac Jones is impressive on the field or in the shower.
Yes, you read that correctly.
On his radio show Friday, Cowherd was ranting about Jones' reported struggles at Patriots practice, but the one-way conversation quickly veered away from his passing ability and towards his average physique. In Cowherd’s mind, Jones just doesn’t pass the look test.
“Justin Fields is 6’4, 220 — a man!,” he said. “Justin Fields walks on the field, you’re like ‘woah! woah! woah!’ The girls, the guys, the coaches, the fans are like ‘woah!’ Mac Jones, we knew this. The body is not filled out, he’s not ripped, he’s not big, he doesn’t have a big arm. … The players are looking at that like I am. If you walk onto the field and that’s the quarterback, you’ve got to be kidding me.”
Jones’ build didn’t hold him back last year at Alabama, where he threw for 4,500 yards and tossed an incredible 41 touchdowns during the Crimson Tide’s undefeated campaign. The Patriots selected Jones at No. 15 overall, bypassing an opportunity to trade up and draft Fields, whom the Bears nabbed at No. 11.
It’s safe to say Cowherd would’ve made a different choice.
“Mac Jones’ body, players don’t buy it,” he said. “Mac Jones in the shower, that doesn’t look like Justin Fields.”
Wait, what? Where do you think Cowherd was going there? Unfortunately, we’ll never find out, because the veteran radio host quickly caught himself, and then just started listing the names of some all-time great quarterbacks.
“Tom Brady is 6-foot-5,” Cowherd said. “I’ve been in a room with Peyton Manning. That’s a pro athlete. You’re in the room with some of these guys, you’re like ‘Cam Newton, Big Ben, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Brett Favre.’ You watch him throw one time at practice, ‘OK!’ Patrick Mahomes!”
It’s interesting that Cowherd lists Brady among other prized physical specimens, considering TB12’s notoriously doughy look after college. Brady undoubtedly looks better in the shower now than when he started playing.
Maybe the same can happen with Jones. A kid can dream.
