WEEI Football Sunday - Will teams even want Belichick?

"Today. When we went out."

That's what Patriots tight end Hunter Henry told the media following Sunday's game when asked when he and his teammates found out who would start for the Patriots at quarterback in their loss to the Giants.

His head coach, however, had a different answer.

"I can't remember," Bill Belichick said of when he informed the team who the starting quarterback would be. "Sometime during the week."

In a follow up to this answer, the head coach then said the team was informed before they left for New Jersey.

Jones, who was benched for Zappe following an abysmal first half where he turned the ball over twice and was inches close to a third, wouldn't indulge when asked when he found out Belichick's decision. Zappe the same.

Is this it all semantics? Perhaps. At the end of the day, New England, who now sits at 2-9 in 2023, would likely have lost anyway no matter who knew, and who didn't know, that Jones would be getting the start. But it goes to show that during turmoil, even the team that's always been tight-lipped and tidy with the media can't get their outside messaging straight when the proverbial crap hits the fan.

With the quarterback position becoming more disastrous by the minute, the Patriots will welcome the Chargers to Gillette Stadium next Sunday. Who will start at quarterback, coach Belichick?

"We just finished the game."

Hopefully, for the sake of the T.E.A.M. team, the decision comes sooner than it did this past week.
