The Red Sox were dealt a significant blow when news broke that their newly signed right-hander, Lucas Giolito, would not be available for Opening Day and could potentially face season-ending surgery on his pitching elbow.

However, the Red Sox and Giolito avoided the worst-case scenario.

On Wednesday, the 29-year-old underwent an internal brace procedure on the partially torn ligament in his pitching elbow. This alternative to Tommy John surgery gives Giolito a much better chance to pitch throughout the 2025 season.

This is the same procedure Trevor Story underwent.

Giolito, who signed a two-year, $38.5 million deal this offseason, can void the second year of his contract. However, considering he will be coming off an injury to his pitching arm, the 2019 All-Star will likely choose to stick with the contract for the guaranteed $19 million instead of testing free agency.

Assuming Giloltio does opt-in, if he pitches fewer than 140 innings in 2025, Boston will receive a $14 million club option for the 2026 season.

The 8-year vet has earned a reputation for exceptional durability. He led the league in starts last season and has pitched at least 160 innings in five of the previous six seasons.

Boston's starting rotation now features Brayan Bello and Nick Pivetta, with Tanner Houck, Garrett Whitlock, Kutter Crawford, and Josh Winckowski likely competing for available spots.
